Audio
I realized that I never spoke of how I'm going about the audio. So I'm amending my mistake by doing it now.

Since the Bolex doesn't record sound I had to seek a new way of capturing the sound. During the shoot we ran a boom to a flash audio recorder. When it comes time to edit I'm going to have to sync up all of the sound by hand. If I had more time/money/film I would have done a slate at the top of the shots but I didn't want to waste film stock.

Another issue is that the bolex records in 18 frames per second. The audio records in something like 29.9 fps. So when I do the telecine I'll have to update the film to a modern frame rate, according to the guy who owns the telecine this is possible.

The added issue is that we are going to have to design the sound in a way that fits the image. I have a post audio guy who is exited and ready to do this.

I have a feeling that the audio is going to be the most labor intensive part of post production.

Wow! That was fast!
I sent the film out last Monday the 12th and it is already back, today is Monday the 19th. I guess what made it so quick is that Dwayne's processes ecticrome on Wednesdays and that is when my film arrived.

From what I can tell the film came out great. I don't have an 8mm projector so I'm going to have to see what it look like when the telecine is complete. I have a local guy who does it and he told me I can come and see the process. It sounds like it is going to be another week before he has time to it. I'll keep you informed. I'm super excited to see what it look like and start cutting the film.

In the Mail!
Despite that April 17th date stamp today is October 13th 2009.

On Sunday the 11th I shot the rest of the film. Taking a hint from the first shoot I got everything organized to the best of my ability. Then I had a friend come out to serve as an Assistant Director. Everything went better than I could have imagined. We finished early and everyone worked hard and well together.

There were a couple of times when I was loading the film that the take up spool didn't wrap the film as tight as it could of. I don't think it caused any problems but we will find out when the film comes back.

I sent my 3 reels of film to Dwayne's in Kansas yesterday, the 12th.

It should take 1 week to process. I'll keep you informed of when they come back. I'm super excited to see how it turns out. I had a lot of fun shooting with the bolex and got some really great shots.

First Shoot
Well the first shoot wasn't too successful. The weather was less than satisfactory, things weren't organized, and we didn't get a whole lot of usable footage.

Scheduling a reshoot isn't going to be very easy. Getting everyone to be there at the same time for a decent amount of time is almost impossible.

Lets hope next time the shoot goes smoother.

You didn't cross your fingers..
The film I sent to Dwanyes Photo came back. They don't develop K2 (K II) Kodachrome film. The suggested Film Rescue but they charge $30 to develop a 25ft roll of 8mm. So I ordered 3 rolls of new film from Dwaynes.

They came in quick and I start shooting the film this Tuesday. So here is your second chance, cross your fingers even harder and hope with me that there isn't any problems with my bolex, like a light leak.

Thanks for crossing your fingers.

Fingers Crossed
My Girlfriend became the DP yesterday and we finished up the test footage. I tried to film some things that can be used a B-Roll in the film. I sent the film to the lab to be developed. I've got my fingers crossed that this film with a 1971 expiration date will be okay. I won't know for two more weeks. This gives me time to story board the film, cast the actors, and hopefully find all the props I need.

I'm Making a Film
I'm making a 3 minute narrative with the bolex. It is going to take place in 1968. It is part of my independent study at Ball State University. Since it is for credit I have to finish it. The goal is to make a film that looks like it took place in 1968. I'll keep you posted on how things go. I've already got a script and I'm starting to do pre-production and some fund raising to get some capital for film stock.
